Learn how to clean TV screens and remove streaks and smudges from computer screens and laptop screens. Follow these steps to remove dirt and germs without damaging your device.

High-tech is becoming high-touch, and our laptop and computer screens tend to get smudged from more than just fingerprints. Skin oils, food splatters, pet dander, and other bits can end up on the surface, while dirt and airborne particles can settle into crevices. Humidity makes it even easier for these particles to stick, so if you don't clean your screen regularly, it can get pretty grimy.

How often should you clean your laptop & computer screen?

Always follow manufacturer instructions for cleaning and disinfecting electronics. To keep your laptop and computer screens clean, give them a wipe down about once a week to maintain clear, sharp visibility and help prevent dust, oils and grime from building up. During cold and flu season, you may want to wipe down screens and high-touch areas more often to help reduce the spread of germs. Regular cleaning may also help protect the screen surface from scratches and help keep your device looking and performing at its best.

What to use to clean laptop screens & computer monitors

Steps to clean laptop & desktop screens

  1. Power down devices

Always follow manufacturer instructions for cleaning and disinfecting electronics. Unplug the computer and disconnect the keyboard and mouse. Make sure laptops are completely powered down. Remove batteries from wireless accessories, and if possible remove laptop batteries.

  2. Clean hard, nonporous surfaces

Pull a Clorox™ Disinfecting Wipe from the canister and wipe down plastic components and other hard, nonporous surfaces.

    Tip

Wring excess moisture from the wipe before wiping the keyboard. Avoid letting any of the cleaning solution seep into the seams of the casing or inbetween the keys.

  3. Clean the screen

If the computer manufacturer allows, use Clorox™ Disinfecting Wipes to clean the screen by starting in the center of the screen and gently wiping in a circular motion.

    Tip

If you can’t use disinfecting wipes, use a microfiber cloth dampened with water and excess water wrung out to clean the screen.

  4. Sanitize or disinfect

To sanitize or disinfect, after pre-cleaning, wipe the hard, nonporous surfaces again with more Clorox™ Disinfecting Wipes until visibly wet. Surfaces must remain visibly wet for 10 seconds to sanitize and 4 minutes to disinfect before air drying.

  5. Air dry

Make sure the computer, laptop, keyboard and accessories have dried completely before reinserting batteries, reconnecting components to the power source, and turning the power back on.

How to clean a TV screen

Since you’re not likely touching the TV screen as you would a tablet or phone, you may just need a quick dusting with a microfiber cloth. If you have stubborn spots, you can use a damp cloth with water or a screen-safe cleaner.

How to clean a keyboard

Unplug or turn off your device. Use compressed air to blow out any dust and debris between the keys, then gently wipe the surface with a cloth dampened with a mixture of water and mild soap.

How to clean a tablet screen

If your tablet’s manufacturer’s guide says bleach-free disinfecting wipes are an appropriate way to clean your device, begin by turning off and unplugging your device. Wipe the screen, top, sides and back with Clorox™ Disinfecting Wipes. Avoid getting any liquid into the buttons or other openings. If you have a case, clean the case thoroughly. Don’t use Clorox™ Disinfecting Wipes on leather cases. Air dry.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you use a Clorox™ Disinfecting Wipe on a TV Screen?

No, we don’t recommend using Clorox™ Disinfecting Wipes on your TV screen as they’re only intended for use on hard, nonporous surfaces. If needed, dampen a cloth with distilled water or a screen-safe cleaner specifically designed for electronics. Always follow manufacturer instructions for cleaning and disinfecting electronics.

Can you use glass cleaner or eyeglass cleaner on a laptop screen or monitor?

We don’t recommend using regular glass cleaner on a monitor as it can damage the screen's protective coating. Some eyeglass cleaners may be safe for a laptop screen if they are free of ammonia and harsh chemicals — always check the label first and follow your device’s guidelines.

Can you use Clorox™ Disinfecting wipes on a computer screen, laptop or monitor?

Clorox™ Disinfecting Wipes are great for a quick and easy clean on hard, nonporous surfaces such as a computer exterior or monitor, but make sure to check your manufacturer’s instructions first. For cleaning the actual screen, it’s safer to use a microfiber cloth and a screen-safe cleaner instead.

What is the best way to clean a computer screen, monitor or laptop screen?

We recommend turning off the device and gently wiping the screen with a dry microfiber cloth. If using a screen-safe cleaner, never spray liquid directly on the screen.

How do you disinfect a laptop and computer screen?

Power down the device and wipe the screen gently with a microfiber cloth dampened with a screen-safe disinfectant. Avoid soaking the cloth or letting moisture seep into the edges of the device. Always wipe in one direction and allow the screen to air dry completely before turning the device back on.
