How do I remove deodorant stains from my dark blue cotton shirt?

By Dr. Laundry April 12, 2016

Q: How do I remove deodorant stains from my dark blue cotton shirt?

A: If this is a smear of deodorant that got on the shirt while you were getting dressed, then you can probably get the stain off by applying a little hot water to a wash cloth and then very gently rubbing the hot, wet wash cloth back and forth across the deodorant stain.  It should transfer to the wash cloth. This is really helpful when you get this type of stain while getting dressed and you have an otherwise clean shirt you need to wear.

If, on the other hand, these stains are a combination of deodorant and perspiration, you will need to pretreat the stains with a little liquid laundry detergent that contains an enzyme before washing.  Apply a little laundry detergent to the stains, gently rub it into the stain, and wait 5-10 minutes before washing the shirt in the hottest water recommended on the shirt’s care label.  Air dry and check for success.  If the stains have been developing over time, you may need to repeat the treatment to get the stain all the way out.

Let me know how it turns out!
