Myth vs. Fact
Know the truth about bleach.
At Clorox, we’ve heard plenty of tall tales about bleach over the years, and we figured it’s time to put some of the rumors to rest. Let’s dispel a few common myths, and get to know America’s favorite disinfectant a little better.

Myth:
"Isn't bleach dangerous?"
Fact: When used as directed, Clorox™ Disinfecting Bleach is absolutely safe for household cleaning. Before all of our bleach and disinfecting products go on the market, Clorox conducts rigorous human and environmental safety assessments, evaluating ingredients and product formulations. Data on disinfecting products are also independently reviewed and approved by the U.S. EPA. And once Clorox products are in the hands of consumers, we are committed to regularly monitoring the safety of our products in the marketplace. We encourage consumers to report any concerns using the company contact information present on the product label.

Myth:
"Aren't bleach fumes harmful?"
Fact: Bleach fumes can be irritating in high concentrations or poorly ventilated spaces, but when diluted and used correctly, they are not harmful. That “bleach smell” isn’t from the bleach itself — it’s from the chemical reaction between bleach and organic matter like dirt or germs. The “bleach smell” is how you know it’s working. Always clean in a well-ventilated area and avoid mixing bleach with other cleaners to prevent chemical reactions.

Myth:
"Isn't Clorox bleach bad for the environment?"
Fact: Clorox™ bleach is designed to be environmentally responsible. It works effectively in cold water, helping save energy, and it breaks down into mostly table salt and water. The remaining trace elements are treated by wastewater systems. Also, you should know that bleach in your laundry does not harm aquatic life when used as directed.

Myth:
"Doesn't bleach damage fabrics and washing machines?"
Fact: Extensive lab testing shows that bleach does not degrade fabric more than detergent alone — even after 50 wash cycles. The real culprits of wear and tear are friction, drying and repeated use. Clorox™ Disinfecting Bleach is safe for use in both standard and HE washing machines when used as directed. Just avoid using bleach on delicate fabrics like wool, silk or spandex.

Myth:
"Isn't bleach too strong for use around kids and pets?"
Fact: Bleach is safe to use in homes with children and pets when used properly. After cleaning, rinse surfaces that may come into contact with food, toys, tiny hands or paws. If you prefer effective bleach alternatives, Clorox also offers bleach-free products you’ll love.

Myth:
"Isn't bleach only for laundry?"
Fact: Bleach is one of the most versatile cleaning products available, beyond the laundry room. It disinfects hard, nonporous surfaces, sanitizes pet bowls, removes mold and mildew, and even helps clean pools. It’s also used in disaster relief efforts and emergency preparedness. Clorox partners with organizations like the American Red Cross to provide bleach for safe water treatment and sanitation during crises.

Myth:
"Isn't bleach outdated?"
Fact: Clorox™ bleach is a heritage product but remains unmatched in its efficacy, value and versatility. It’s effective on certain emerging viral pathogens worldwide1 and continues to be the gold standard for disinfection. Whether you’re caring for loved ones, preparing for a big move or tackling everyday messes, Clorox™ bleach gets the job done effectively the first time.
