Removing Lemon Water Spots Out of Drinking Glasses

By Dr. Laundry April 20, 2017

Q. How do I get lemon water spots out of drinking glasses?

—Roderick

A. Hi Roderick;

This is something I haven’t heard of before. Usually people ask about residue left behind by automatic dishwashing detergents. They tend to leave more spots on glassware because the formulations no longer include phosphates.

We don’t make a version of the product that people add to their dishwasher to help rinse away the detergent, so I don’t have a solid recommendation for you there. And just because I haven’t heard of lemon water stains doesn’t mean it isn’t a problem for you. As long as the staining isn’t actually etching of the glass (which would be irreversible), you could try wiping with a little sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) and water to neutralize and acid from the lemon juice. Let me know how it turns out if you decide to give it a try. Thanks for writing!
