After I wash a load using bleach, do I need to run an empty cycle to eliminate any bleach residue?

By Dr. Laundry January 25, 2016

Q: I have a standard washer and wanted to wash some whites with bleach. I wanted to know, after I wash a load using bleach, do I need to run an empty cycle to eliminate any bleach residue? I don’t want any of my color clothing to get ruined if there is any leftover bleach from the previous cycle. Thank you in advance for you help!   A Thanks for sending in your question–it’s such a good one.  As long as your clothes washer is functioning properly and you add the bleach during the wash cycle (not the rinse cycle!) you should be able to wash any type of load you like following a bleach load without running an empty cycle first.  Of course if your clothes washer has an option for an extra rinse cycle, you may want to select it for a little extra reassurance, but there’s no need to run an empty cycle.  Please let me know if you have any other questions, and thanks for writing!   –Dr. Laundry
