“Every song I sing is about the world as I know it,” says Rodney Atkins. “Every word is real. I’m not going to sing it if it isn’t.” That’s a powerful statement from the recording artist with an album entitled “It’s America.”
Two songs on the album, “Simple Things” and “It’s America,” are a nod to his East Tennessee upbringing and a reflection of everyday life with his family now. “The best songs are the ones you can see yourself in,” he says.
Roots are especially important for Atkins because he was adopted as a baby from the Holston United Methodist Home for Children, in Greenville, Tenn. He is an active supporter of the home, and has been the National Spokesperson for the National Council for Adoption since 2008. “Where would I be without my family? And where will the kids be tomorrow if they never find families of their own?” he asks.
