Frogs around the world are disappearing at an alarming rate. And Clorox has become part of the solution.
Clorox is the first official corporate sponsor of "The Year of The Frog" – a campaign to raise awareness and funds to help avert the extinction crisis.
Amphibian Ark, a non-profit coalition, is coordinating "Year of The Frog" in a global effort to engage the public, governments and corporate sponsors to help rescue the endangered amphibians.
Frogs have been around since the dinosaurs, they're critical to the world ecosystem and half of them may be wiped out in our lifetime.
One of the culprits detrimental to frogs is a chytrid (KIT-rid) fungus. To combat it, zoos and aquariums around the world are taking the most threatened species into "protective custody" in bio-secure environments. The frogs are treated with an anti-fungal medicine. Everything else is treated with a bleach solution to prevent the spread of the fungus: boots, clothing, instruments, even the frogs' new environments.
In addition to sponsoring the "Year of the Frog" and contributing bleach to the rescue effort, Clorox has joined forces with Animal Planet to produce a documentary, "The Vanishing Frog". Wildlife biologist, Jeff Corwin goes around the world investigating the frogs' plight. Check local listings for the documentary's airing.
