A living legend, Dolly Parton has been performing and writing songs since she was a child growing up in the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee. By the time she was 11 years old, she was performing on local television — “I was on TV before we even owned one” — and when she was 14 she had a guest spot on the Grand Ole Opry. She has gone on to triumph in pop as well as country music.
She never has forgotten her roots, which is why she started her Imagination Library to provide free books to children age 5 and under. Today hundreds of local communities across three countries have replicated her program for their preschool children. "When I was a little kid my mama used to sit me on her lap and read to me," Dolly says. "This memory was the seed that would later sprout and bloom as my Imagination Library."
